Constellations is an artistic project that creates a space of encounter between contemporary dance and jazz improvisation, between body and sound, between the individual and the collective. It is a performance practice grounded in the principle of instant composition, co-created this time by a generationally and aesthetically diverse group of dancers and musicians: Alja Branc Barbosa, Urška Centa, Andreja Rauch Podrzavnik, Žigan Kranjčan, Kristyna Peldova, Lara Matea Ivančič, Sara Janašković, Rok Zalokar, and international guest artist Lily Kiara, a Dutch dance artist and singer-songwriter.

The Constellations project transcends the notion of improvisation as mere reactivity or impulsive expression. It foregrounds a shared awareness of dramaturgy that unfolds organically during the performance – a dramaturgy that is not predefined but emerges from a multitude of micro-decisions, continuous listening, and relational sensitivity. This is a complex choreographic fabric that responds in real time to the question: how can we maintain inner coherence within a polyphony of expressions, practices, and artistic languages?

The artistic focus moves toward an exploration of relational structures, between bodies and sounds, through which the creators touch on a fundamental truth of human experience: that reality, as we perceive it, always already emerges in relation to the other. Without these interwoven relationships, the world would lack inner depth, diversity, and sensory richness. Constellations operates as a laboratory of contemporary community, in which individual expression reveals itself only through the ability to transform and be recognized in another.

At the forefront is a horizontal mode of collaboration, without hierarchies and without rigid distribution of authorship, where the roles of leader and follower continuously shift. The creators consciously operate as parts of a broader compositional whole, one that cannot be controlled or preframed, but can only be co-created through high levels of presence, flexibility, and ethical openness.

The year 2025 marks a new chapter in the project, which after its first incarnation on April 29, 2024, on International Dance Day, as part of the event 20 meters long, nine meters wide, and four meters high, organized by the Contemporary Dance Association of Slovenia, is now entering a phase of deep processual research. The project is not product-oriented but process-oriented. Its aim is not to present a finished form, but to establish the conditions for intersections between the physical, the sonic, and the perceptive, where art happens as a continuous, open dialogue

Constellations is therefore both an artistic practice and a way of being – an attempt to establish a form of community that is not homogeneous, but constellational: interwoven, responsive, multilayered.
