Poetic body with Milan Tomášik

Monday, July 1st – Saturday, July 6th, 2024
10:00 – 17:00

We are starting this year’s Research Cycles workshop program with the Poetic Body workshop led by the exceptional Slovak choreographer, performer, and educator in the field of dance and performing arts, Milan Tomášik (SK/SLO). Following the successful workshop last year at Cankarjev dom, this year’s event will take place in collaboration with the Summer Dance School of JSKD.

Are you interested in experiencing your body fully present, alive and engaged? Do you wish to upgrade you physical possibilities, get inspired by contemporary dance, improvisation and composition? Are you looking for a safe and friendly environment where differences are respected and individuality is nourished? If you do, join us on a dancing journey in September.

Where attention goes energy flows. Poetic Body workshop represents an ongoing, immersive practice built on experience of Milan’s previous teaching methods Happy Feet and Playful Presence. It incorporates the concept of the body as an instrument or medium capable of expressing and embodying diverse movement qualities, rhythm, tension, emotions, and immateriality. Poetic Body is about the ability to execute any desired action fully, passionately and with ease. It brings action by waking up the body & mind through different physical games, by getting the body attuned to the moment, the space, connecting to ourselves and the environment.

The workshop offers a holistic approach to dancing, in which the practice of spontaneous and set movement is intertwined, technique meets with passion and wellbeing is priority. The emphasis is on rhythm and musicality, but the method also pays attention on articulation of the different body parts, precise execution of movement, foot work, jumps, and spins. Milan will guide you through the exploration of contrasting movement qualities such as range of body tension and together we will investigate the connection between emotion and motion.

The workshops will take place at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet Ljubljana. They will conclude with a public presentation of the research process. We will open our six-day creative coexistence to the audience on the last day of the workshop, on Saturday, July 6th.
